I Gao Brothers sono due fratelli artisti poliformi, teorici dell’arte e attivisti cinesi. Gao Zhen (Jinan, Cina, 1956) e Gao Qiang (Jinan, Cina, 1962) si stabiliscono entrambi a Pechino nel 2002 e fanno della “fratellanza” una cifra della loro arte, ideando ad esempio il World Hug Day, performance pacifista che prevede un abbraccio tra sconosciuti in luoghi simbolo di rivoluzioni contro guerra e oppressione. Tra le opere più famose Miss Mao, una caustica caricatura in vetroresina di Mao Tse Tung, e la serie fotografica Sense of Space.

I Gao Brothers sono una coppia di fratelli artisti cinesi, rispettivamente Zhen, nato nel 1956, e Qiang Gao, nato nel 1962, originari di Jinan, nella provincia dello Shandong.
Il padre morì quando erano entrambi molto giovani; ufficialmente si suicidò dopo essere stato incarcerato, anche se i due fratelli nutrirono sempre forti dubbi sull’effettivo suicidio del padre. Per questo, probabilmente, la loro arte è così densa di significati sociali e politici, basti pensare a quante volte ricorre l’immagine di Mao nelle loro opere.
Entrambi si laureano: Gao Zhen all’Accademia di Belle Arti dello Shandong e Gao Qiang all’Università Normale di Qufu.
Durante gli anni Ottanta hanno iniziato a lavorare insieme su performance, installazioni, sculture e lavori fotografici.
Nel 1989 parteciparono ad una mostra collettiva organizzata dal Museo Nazionale d’Arte della Cina (NAMOC), che segnò l’inizio della loro carriera.
Nel 2002 si trasferirono a Pechino dove hanno iniziato a lavorare nel distretto degli artisti chiamato 798 Art Zone nel Distretto d’Arte Dashanzi.
Al giorno d’oggi il loro lavoro artistico è riconosciuto a livello globale e alcune delle loro opere fanno parte delle più importanti collezioni pubbliche e private di tutto il mondo: Steven Cohen, Uli Sigg, Adrian David and Charles Saatchi, Ramin Salsali,Centre Georges Pompidou, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Princeton University Art Museum, Kemper Museum Of Contemporary Art.
